Saturday 4th March 2006 – The 3rd running of the DNFUCRally was a fine and sunny day, as is pretty much the case just about anywhere in Victoria at this time of year. And, because it’s summer in Australia, you can expect it to have been dry as well. Well, let me tell you, it was dry and of course, dusty.
77 starters headed out into the forest near Traralgon for around 120km of gravel rallying and your truly was the Chief Spectator Marshall. So that involves setting up the spectator point, briefing the marshalls and generally making sure spectators are kept safe.
The other lad and I had a busy day early on and then it was pretty cruisy while the event ran through our point twice and then busy again as we headed across to the night time point via HQ to get some lighting.
Did I mention the dust? Well, at the previous point the dust blew away reasonably quickly after each car and while a little distracting but not too annoying.
Enter the night time point, and no wind and lots of trees and a low point at the bottom of the ridge, you get my drift? Dust hanging, not clearing for 5-10 mins (if you had that sort of break between cars), breath that stuff in baby, mmm, mmm, mmmmm!
Some other items of note, nice fast stage we got to drive through a couple times, would have been interesting to compete on in a competitive car. Alcohol and rally spectating are not a good mix, but diplomacy and a firm resolve work wonders (thanks John).
So the pitch report was as usual in that area, hard packed, fast, a little rough in places and……….did I mention the dust?
Only a couple things could have made a better day though, Dale, Sean and less DUST!!
Bring on the next one!
Ciao for now……….
